The celebration for the 2021 BOP – Bologna Prize for the Best Children’s Publishers of the Year is a key part of the BCBF Online Special Edition. The BOP Prize is awarded each year to showcase editorial projects, professional skills and intellectual qualities of work from publishing houses all over the world. Let’s meet New Africa Books, nominee for Africa!

New Africa Books

New Africa Books, incorporating David Philip Publishers, is one of South Africa’s oldest and most prestigious independent publishing houses. With a history stretching back over 45 years, New Africa Books currently publishes books for children and Young Adults in eleven languages spoken in South Africa. It also continues to make available the David Philip backlist of literary fiction and non-fiction titles that resonate today. Currently owned by the distinguished Sisulu family, and spearheaded by the highly experienced publisher Dusanka Stojakovic (formerly of Pan MacMillan), New Africa Books has in recent years recast itself as a perfectly-formed small publisher, operating with a philosophy in contrast to the model that pervades much of the South African industry. We find gaps in the book market, and we fill them with meaningful, beautiful books that address the problems our society faces.
